Does a wet patch show where an underground pipe is leaking?

It shows where water is visible. It does not establish the pipe route, ownership or the exact failure point. Start with the water account, nearby irrigation and what changed before anyone digs.

Record the patch without disturbing the ground

Describe the wet area using a fixed landmark such as a gate or walkway. Note whether it appeared after rain, irrigation or a change in water use. Photograph it from firm, safe ground. Do not step into a depression, probe the soil or lift heavy covers to investigate.

Tell us whether the house has a utility water account, a private well or a separate irrigation source, if known. If you are unsure, say so. An outdoor supply concern needs the system identified before a meter observation can be interpreted.

Establish which line is being discussed

Ask whether the suspected route is the supply to the house, an irrigation branch or utility infrastructure. Those are different scopes. The utility should assess concerns at its equipment or a suspected main; private repair acceptance must be checked separately.

FPUA’s customer guidance distinguishes water flow between a meter and a customer shutoff from flow farther into the property. That makes the location of the observation useful, but it does not tell you who owns every pipe or authorize operating utility equipment. Ask for help when the meter, valve or system arrangement is unclear.

Locating a leak and clearing a dig are different jobs

Sunshine 811 explains that its member utilities mark their facilities and that private facilities require separate attention. A leak location alone is not clearance to excavate. Before repair digging, establish who will arrange utility notification and any private-line locating needed for the planned work.

Discuss the route to the work area: gates, pavement, landscaping and any shared path. Have the estimate identify what may be lifted or removed and who will restore it. Do not assume a quoted pipe repair includes a new driveway panel, pavers or plant replacement.

  • Which section of pipe is included in the search?
  • What private services cross the proposed access area?
  • Who handles the required locating and excavation arrangements?
  • What surface restoration is included?

Make the repair handoff usable

Ask for the location to be described in relation to features that will remain after flags or marks fade. Keep the findings with any photos and the repair estimate. If the source remains uncertain, ask what additional observation or access would resolve the question.

A lawn that looks drier after a weather change does not settle whether a supply leak was repaired. Discuss an appropriate completion check for the identified system and record any work still outstanding.

Questions about this work

Can this cover irrigation or a well line?

State the system when you call and confirm that the specific work is accepted. A household water-supply inquiry does not automatically include irrigation, well equipment or pool piping.

Who should I call if water appears to be coming from the street?

Contact the utility responsible for that location. If you are an FPUA customer, its current customer guidance provides water-line reporting instructions. Keep away from damaged pavement or open ground.
